Chapter 79 – Ahhhhhh!

President Xi was widely known for his cold-hearted style in the business world. Who knew that one day he would fall in love? Moreover, it was such a relatively taboo relationship. It really gave Lu Shi a feeling of anticipation.

Lu Shi waved at Duan Shu Tong. Pulling his suitcase along behind him, he left with an easy and free air about him.

Duan Shu Tong got into the car with Xi Duan. So as to not disturb Xi Duan while he worked but still keep himself entertained, Duan Shu Tong put on Bluetooth earphones. He planned to listen to crosstalks* the entire ride there.

[*T/N: Crosstalk is defined as casual conversation, but in this instance, it specifically refers to comic dialogue or a sketch, meant to amuse and entertain.]

Xi Duan only opened his mouth after the car had left Shan Quan County and gotten on the highway. “You don’t have much luggage. Did you not bring any formal clothes?”

Duan Shu Tong took off the earphones and replied, “I didn’t have any [formal clothes] at home, and there wasn’t enough time. I’m thinking of buying a set of formalwear when I get to Hai City.”

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

He expected them to arrive in Hai City at noon. He would have about half a day’s worth of time to buy some formal clothes.

Xi Duan said: “Tell me your size.”

Duan Shu Tong asked: “…What?”

Xi Duan seemed to not realize that Duan Shu Tong was in a predicament, and continued: “I also did not bring any formal clothes. Over there [in Hai City], there is a shop that I am familiar with. If we send them the sizing now, they will send the clothes to the hotel we’re staying at later.”

Cen Ning, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, thought: …President Xi, I’m always the one doing these trivial things for you. If you contact them in person now, won’t you end up scaring the other side?

Duan Shu Tong was not unreasonable. He was not familiar with Hai City. Rather than bumble around like a headless chicken looking for some formalwear, why not freeload a set of clothes off of Xi Duan?

He already owed the other man so much, what was one more thing?

“I’ll transfer money to you later,” Duan Shu Tong said seriously.

The corners of Xi Duan’s lips were slightly raised. Even the tiny mole at the end of his eyebrow seemed to be jumping up arrogantly. “Okay.”

The car fell silent again. Xi Duan did not seem like he would continue talking, so Duan Shu Tong put on his earphones again and continued to listen to a crosstalk to relax.

He was worried that he would think bad thoughts again from being in a small, enclosed space with Xi Duan.

His WeChat suddenly sounded. He clicked into the app, and saw that Lu Shi had sent him a screenshot. The title on the screenshot made Duan Shu Tong raise his eyebrows.

#The Spring and Autumn Hall has unexpectedly become favored by the [entertainment] circle.

He immediately went on Weibo, scrolled for a while, and finally understood what was going on. He felt both exasperated and touched.

The scar removal effect of Spring Flower No. 2 was beginning to show. Everyone had a herd mentality. Seeing so many people buying the product, they thought that the effect must naturally be good, so it would be better to buy a bottle and keep it at home than to have nothing at all. Thus, the sales for Spring Flower No. 2 were pushed to the apex.

The Spring and Autumn Hall obviously did not have enough stock, and there were some people who could not buy it even if they wanted to, so they went online to cry about it. Netizens watching the excitement online did not mind making the matter even bigger, so those that were able to buy a bottle, took a picture, and showed it off online.

Just having unrelated individuals showing off their purchase was fine, whatever, but what was really irritating was when someone flaunted the fact that Spring Flower No. 2 was given out as a company benefit, and everyone in the company got a bottle.

Everyone scrutinized this post and saw that it was the same id as before. It looked like the Xi group made a large purchase of Spring Flower No. 2. Man, so rich and overbearing!

But gradually, the netizens discovered that it was not only the Xi Corporation’s employees who were showing off their benefits.

“What the f*ck? Hahaha. The Duan Company is also putting on an imperious air. They lost the first time, but they can’t lose again the second time!”

“Chairman Duan (lights a cigar): Your daddy is still your daddy*.”

[*T/N: I think the author was trying to make a pun in Chinese. 爸爸 baba which means “daddy” is a homonym for 霸霸 baba which is like an “overbearing CEO.” I feel like “daddy” has the same connotation in English, so I just went with that. Btw, in case it wasn’t clear, the dialogue above is a netizen pretending to be Chairman Duan.]

“LMAO, if we’re talking about “daddies” in the business world, then how can we forget Jinshi Jewelry?”

“Why would Jinshi Jewelry get embroiled in this?”

“The Xi family and Duan family have relations, so it’s normal for the Xi Corporation to show some support for the Duan family’s young master. I just don’t know why Jinshi Jewelry would get mixed up in this.”

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

Duan Shu Tong was also confused when he saw this. He could understand why the Duan Company would show [him] support, and he could sort of understand why the Xi Corporation would do such a thing too, but he didn’t know why Jinshi Jewelry would get involved.

He searched for Jinshi Jewelry on the Internet, and when he saw that the chairman’s surname was Lu, he immediately came to a realization.

He went back on WeChat and directly messaged Lu Shi: Thank you for your support.

Lu Shi replied: Of course [I should support you]. But President Xi really does take care of you. I saw someone that dug through the Internet archives say that when Spring Flower No. 1 first came out, the Xi Corporation purchased a big batch.

Duan Shu Tong was really shocked, he didn’t know about this at all!

Chapter 90 – Jealousy

“Ah?” Ji Qisheng immediately started to wail like a ghost and howl like a wolf, “I don’t want to. I’ve only been here for two days, and I just became friends with Qiu Jin!”

Ji Shenxiao ignored him and glanced at Qiu Jin. The mood in his dark eyes was unclear: “Come here, follow me upstairs.”

“You’re talking to me?” Qiu Jin was a little dazed, but he still raised his legs and followed, “What’s the matter?”

Ji Shenxiao said: “Close the door.”

Qiu Jin closed the door obediently and saw Ji Shenxiao looking at him.

The man’s gaze was deep and rich, with a heat that could almost burned him.

Qiu Jin couldn’t stand it. Distracted, he asked: “You… what are you doing?”

Ji Shenxiao didn’t answer him. He just took another step forward.

The man was tall. He had two shirt buttons undone and he was dripping with perspiration. This was the polar opposite of his usually calm, aloof, and ascetic image. His entire person was oozing with sex appeal.

Qiu Jin suddenly realized that the current Ji Shenxiao was not the same as usual. It was as if he has entered the susceptible period of an alpha. But didn’t the doctor say that Ji Shenxiao couldn’t perceive other people’s pheromones. Since that’s the case, then he shouldn’t have a susceptible period, right?

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

But before he wasn’t listening very carefully, so maybe he remembered something wrong. Qiu Jin was just thinking about picking up the phone to ask the doctor, when he noticed that the back of his neck was hot. Ji Shenxiao’s hand was on his gland!

Although they did temporary markings before, they had never done such an intimate gesture. Qiu Jin froze there for a while.

“President Ji?”

Ji Shenxiao didn’t look at him, just said in a soft and unhurried tone: “You didn’t put on a gland patch.”

Qiu Jin breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, I accidentally rubbed it off when I was wiping my head. I haven’t had time to put on a new one.”

Ji Shenxiao then said: “The mark has also faded. Do you need to do it again?”

“Isn’t that too frequent…?”

Qiu Jin felt a little tangled. Once a week was already beyond the normal frequency of helping out a stranger.

The corners of Ji Shenxiao’s lips curved up. With a faint anger in his voice, he asked: “Then you would rather run around exuding pheromones, and then let some unknown alpha mark you?”

Qiu Jin hesitated for a while, then nodded: “…All right, then I’ll trouble you.”

After speaking, he hugged a pillow and lay down on the sofa, waiting for the big boss to come.

[T/N: The specific word for “to come” that the author used is 临幸, which is usually used when talking about an emperor going to meet someone, specifically going to a concubine to copulate with her. Lol.]

Ji Shenxiao’s eyes fell on the back of the young man’s neck, with fair skin, elegant lines, and distinct joints, the young man looked as if he could be broken with a single touch. But only after touching him could one know how majestic was the power hidden in this seemingly weak body.

Then he saw the pillow that Qiu Jin was hugging. Ji Shenxiao’s eyes darkened for a moment, and he said slowly, “Are you afraid of me?”

“How could that be?” Qiu Jin smiled apologetically, “It’s mainly because you were too powerful the first two times…”

This was not an exaggeration. Ji Shenxiao was really ruthless. The man looked reserved and restraint, but he was like a beast once he had his mouth on Qiu Jin’s neck. Every time, Qiu Jin would be left weak in the knees and trembling in his waist. He wasn’t even able to sit steady.

As soon as Qiu Jin finished speaking, a deep laughter rang in his ears. The sound was not loud, but it vibrated by his ear, making his heart feel ticklish.

The hot wind outside the window blew the curtains. Ji Shenxiao stood there, half in the light and half in the dark, with a smile on his face. The coldness from before was completely gone. Now he was gentle and tender.

It was hard for Qiu Jin to take his eyes off the man.

It wasn’t until a slight pressing sensation came from his back that Qiu Jin came back to his senses. He lay meekly on the chair, but the smile just now echoed in his mind, reminding him of the sparkling waves on the sea.

The atmosphere was so good that it couldn’t get any better.

Ji Shenxiao finally could no longer bear it, he pressed Qiu Jin’s shoulder with his left hand, and restrained his thin waist with his right hand, and leaned down slowly…

Qiu Jin could sense Ji Shenxiao approaching him from behind and he couldn’t help tensing up. He grabbed the pillow with both hands, his knuckles turning white with the force of his grip.

Hot and humid breath sprayed on his gland…

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

At that precise moment, the door opened with a bang, and Ji Qisheng’s voice came in: “Qiu Jin! I just called my mother, and she said I can stay for two more days! Are you happy…?”

However, when Ji Qisheng finally took in the scene in the room, his entire expression collapsed. He stared blankly at the scene in front of him, receiving an unprecedented shock.

His new friend was lying on the sofa, revealing the fair and delicate back of his neck. He was seductive like an omega. And his pheromone-insulated older brother was pressing Qiu Jin under him in a possessive posture, as if he was about to bite the other man’s gland in the next moment.

Ji Qisheng was dumbfounded: “Brother…”

The man slowly raised his head, his dark pupils were bottomless and full of aggression: “Scram!”

Chapter 133.3 – Royal Banquet

“How is the production of mahjong going right now?”

An Zi Ran looked at Su Zi and Ge Qian An. The person who answered was Ge Qian An. Although Su Zi was the one in charge in this area, he didn’t have much contact with the small farms in the suburbs. This matter concerned caustic soda, so they must not be careless or sloppy in any way.

“Replying to wangfei, the production amount for mahjong is low…”

Mahjong required relatively high craftsmanship, and the manufacturing cost was proportionally higher, making them much more expensive to produce than playing cards. Therefore, the number of mahjong tiles currently produced was much smaller than that of playing cards. Even with a dozens of craftsmen working together, they could only produce roughly a hundred sets of mahjong tiles in a month.

The upper-class ladies of Jun Zi City loved mahjong more than playing cards. When they had nothing better to do, they would gather a few other upper-class ladies and play mahjong together to pass the time.

That’s why, no matter how expensive the price of mahjong was, there would still be many people who want it.

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

Some people even came all the way to Tian Long Gambling House just to ask for a custom-made set of mahjong. However, because the number was limited, the competition was very fierce. Some people would even bid more than a hundred taels, just to be able to grab a set of mahjong tiles first, and then show off to others.

“Mahjong tiles are in short supply. Should we expand production?” Ge Qian An asked.

An Zi Ran shook his head, “Not right now. Other gambling houses are inquiring into caustic soda. Rushing to expand production will only increase the chance of exposure. Moreover, at the current price of mahjong tiles, there isn’t that many people who can afford it. The more rare something is, the greater its value. So on the contrary, keeping supplies low will keep their interest hooked. Let’s wait a little longer.”

Ge Qian An nodded and did not say any more.

Standing on the side, Su Zi immediately handed An Zi Ran the account book of the carving workshop during this period. “Young Master, these are the accounts during the months you were gone from Jun Zi City.”

The ledger for the carving workshop was not limited to just mahjong. In addition to making mahjong tiles, the beef bones could also be carved into various small ornaments. The craftsmen were skillful, and the carved ornaments were very popular with girls. This side venture also brought in more income for An Zi Ran.

An Zi Ran casually skimmed over the accounts. He had faith in Su Zi’s work.

“By the way, while I was away, was there any movement from the fourth concubine?”

This question was directed at Su Zi.

Su Zi was a servant of the An family. He lived within the An Manor. Although he was busy with work, he would still bump into Wang Qing Lan whenever he entered or exited the manor.

Su Zi immediately responded: “Replying to Young Master, Concubine Wang often goes out these days. I heard that she was going to a gathering of upper-class ladies. I also don’t know when she made connections with those people.”

An Zi Ran frowned, “Leave her alone for the time being, and just keep monitoring her.”

After a period of observation, the more he analyzed the situation, the more he felt that Wang Qing Lan was not the murderer who had killed the original owner of this body. The main reason was that she didn’t have the motive to kill the original host. But this kind of intuition still needed facts to back it up.

After Su Zi finished reporting, he left.

But An Zi Ran kept Ge Qian An behind.

“Does wangfei have anymore commands?”

An Zi Ran said: “There is a matter that I need to trouble you with. The An family restaurant is going to open another restaurant in Jun Zi City. Help me look around and see if there is a suitable place to run a restaurant.”

“How big do you need the place to be?”

“I want to have a space big enough for development.”

Ge Qian An immediately nodded in understanding. When he left, Fu Wu Tian had just returned from the palace. He was now an idle wangye, so he didn’t need ot go to morning court, but this time it was the empress dowager who had summoned him into the palace. It had nothing to do with Emperor Chong Ming.

Support the translator. Read this on vmnovels (dot) com

An Zi Ran did not ask him why he went into the palace. He just thought Fu Wu Tian went to chat with the empress dowager about domestic trivia. It wasn’t until they were at the dinner table that Fu Wu Tian told him some unexpected news.

“The imperial palace is going to hold a royal banquet? Fu wangfu also needs to attend?”

As far as An Zi Ran knew, Emperor Chong Ming had always wanted to isolate them. When Fu Wu Tian got married, he didn’t let anyone fomr the imperial family come to attend. So why was he suddenly inviting them to this royal banquet?

You couldn’t blame An Zi Ran for coming up with conspiracy theories.

Emperor Chong Ming was muddleheaded and incompetent, but he still insisted on holding onto power with his own hands. He always targeted the Fu wangfu for their military prowess. But he never considered how he would keep the power once he got a hold of it.

Chapter 16 – It’s an Alpha’s World (6.1)

“It’s just an engagement. Just receiving your [positive] intentions is enough,” Xi Jing’an was still trying to persuade Li Rong. “You can keep the mecha for yourself, I’m sure An Ji won’t mind.”

Li Rong turned his head to ask An Ji, “Do you want it?”

Li Rong was dressed in black and he stood in the moonlight.

Starlight streamed through the curtain of night to fall on him making his figure look talk and straight and his gaze was filled with unswerving determination.

It was at that moment when An Ji realized that what Li Rong had said just now was not an excuse or a joke. Li Rong truly wanted to gift him a mecha.

An Ji’s mouth fell open as he stared blankly at Li Rong. His heartbeat gradually got faster and faster.

He wanted it.

He wanted a mecha so badly.

He has wanted a mecha for a long time now. Back when he was still known as the “light of all omegas” and constantly dodging assassination attempts, he has wanted a mecha.

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

But at that time, there were only mechas made for alphas and betas on the market. In the thousands of years of imperial history, there had never been a single omega to join the battlefield, so naturally there weren’t any mechas adapted for omegas to use.

At that time, Yu Jingmo had promised to give him a custom-made mecha, but not only did that man not give An Ji a mecha, he even intended to steal his spiritual power during the gland-removal operation…

Spiritual power was required for piloting a mecha. If you did not have spiritual power then that meant you could not pilot a mecha at all.

Upon waking up in this second life, the first thing An Ji thought of was to get himself a mecha. It’s just that he didn’t expect Li Rong to say that he would gift him one before he even had time to act on his thought.

Did Li Rong not think it was unorthodox for an omega to pilot a mecha?

Didn’t gifting an omega a mecha made him too much of a straight man*? What kind of omega would want a mecha?

[*T/N: straight man – In Chinese, calling someone a straight man is like saying that guy is the stereotype of a “straight manly man.” Depending on context it can be used as a joke or a derogative. A “straight man” is often inflexible and he’s not sensitive or considerate. In the story, An Ji is saying Li Rong can’t seem to think from the perspective of a stereotypical omega and is just gifting an omega what an alpha would want.]

Xu Jing’an was so anxious that she was about to get a canker sore. Back on ancient Earth, this would be the equivalent of a man giving his fiancée a fighter jet. In theory it sounded cool, but in actuality it was completely useless. It’s over, it’s over. Her son was definitely going to reject him…

“Mom, I want it.” An Ji said suddenly.

“???”

Xu Jing’an was shocked. “You really want it?”

An Ji said, “Yes, I want to pilot a mecha.”

“Before you can pilot a mecha, do you know how tough the training will be?” Xi Jing’an was certain that he would not be able to persevere through the training. “Your An Yao-gege has to run five kilometers every morning. And every time he comes back from stamina training he’s more dead than alive. Not to mention there are mental exercises too. How can an omega like you endure it?”

Support the translator. Read this on vmnovels (dot) com

An Ji replied, “No matter how hard things got on the Junk Star, I’ve survived through them all.”

In a place like the Junk Star where resources were extremely scarce, no one would ever pity you just because you were an omega. On the Junk Star, alphas, betas, and omegas were all treated the same way. If you weren’t fast enough, then you would not be able to get food to eat, and if your skills were lacking, you could easily become a corpse beneath someone else’s blade.

Suffering was commonplace for him.

Although these words were true, they accurately hit Xu Jing’an’s sore spot. Guilt and sadness attacked her together, causing her to be silent for a while.

“You can keep it if you want.” Xu Jing’an sighed and finally compromised.

Wasn’t it just some mecha made by that Qing Kong guy? The return gift would have to be worth several planets, but so what? It’s not like the old An family could not afford it.

An Ji’s eyes brightened. “Thank you, Mom!”

An Yanming also said, “Thank you, wife!”

“Scram,” Xu Jing’an laughed and scolded. “Li Rong is giving it to our son. Why is an old man like you joining in the fun?!”

An Ji also laughed. His life after his rebirth was going much smoother than he had imagined. Up until he crawled into bed at night, An Ji still did not feel like this was reality. The happiness made him feel as light as air. It was like he was lying on a cloud.

But An Ji was very aware that the current ease of life did not mean his future would be free of worries.

The joy dissipated, and An Ji began to seriously think about his future life.

The most important things to him were to work hard to become stronger, to be responsible for his own life, and to protect his parents and younger brother.

After that, his next priorities were to stay away from that scum man and to stay with Li Rong.

As for the two children his parents adopted…

He didn’t have much interaction with An Yao, so he didn’t know much about his character. An Ji decided to label him as someone to be wary of.

As for the other adopted son An Ning… in An Ji’s previous life, An Ning had urged An Ji to flee his marriage with the intention of taking Li Rong for himself, but in the end he got rejected. Later, his ambitious heart caused him to go to the Junk Star. He took advantage of the space left by An Ji’s death to become the so-called “light of all omegas.”

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

At this point in time, An Ning has yet to cause any disturbances, but An Ji must still be on guard against him and be vigilant of any attacks against the An family.

And then there’s…

An Ji paused for a moment, and a few important words slowly appeared in his mind: Omega Liberation Organization.

Omegas had spontaneously gotten together to form this liberation organization. Their aim was the pursuit of freedom, democracy, and equality for all alphas, betas, and omegas.

If believing in Yu Jingmo was his biggest emotional mistake, then the disintegration of the Omega Liberation Organization was his biggest career regret.

Chapter 133

“The Son of Hell let us go. If he ends up getting killed because of us, regardless of how many bad things he did in the past, it would be our fault if he dies.”

Of to one side, the sniper also nodded in agreement. The team members had reached a consensus in a short amount of time, and the deputy team leader had no choice but to sigh reluctantly and turn the car around in resignation, driving in the direction of the Bloodthirsty Forest.

The sky gradually darkened, and Yuan Zheng’s gaze fell upon the silent young man in the corner of the car. Just as he was about to speak, Su Shi had already raised his head: “Stop the car.”

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

The car was just passing by a medium-sized base that was recently destroyed by a wave of zombies. On both sides of the road were half-destroyed dormitory houses. These were the kinds of places where it was most likely for a large number of zombies to suddenly show up.

The deputy team leader hesitated for a while, brought the car to a stop, and then turned around patiently: “Xiao Shi, what is it? Did you notice something?”

Mu Shi nodded. His eyes fell on Yuan Zheng.

There was a faint pleading in those clear eyes. Unconsciously, Yuan Zheng’s heart softened. He reached for the young man’s shoulder and said to the deputy team leader: “Open the door. We’re getting off for a bit.”

“Oh no, no way. How can I let you guys go alone to such a dangerous place? It just so happens that we’re been driving for a long time. Let’s all get off and move around a bit. Little Log*, you go do whatever you want to do. We’ll keep watch for you.”

[*T/N: Refer to chapter 110 for a longer explanation on this nickname. If my memory serves me, this is only the second time he’s been called by this nickname in the story.]

The striker grinned and picked up his weapons without allowing for an explanation.

Mu Shi has never caused trouble for them, and now he suddenly wanted to get off the car, so there must be something that he absolutely had to do.

The other team members didn’t want to disappoint him, but they were also really worried, so they got out of the car together and escorted him into an alley.

Following the map’s guidance, Su Shi walked to a seemingly ordinary warehouse. The light green vine in his sleeve came out again. A tender leaf reached out to slap against the fingerprint scanner, and the AI quickly decoded the lock, smoothly opening the dusty electronic lock.

The heavy door slowly opened, and the team members looked inside. Their eyes widened in surprise.

This seemed to be a private warehouse, but the contents were unbelievable, making them doubt their eyes.

All kinds of easy-to-store food items have been piled up to the ceiling, and on the other side were piles of medicines that were extremely scarce in these post-apocalyptic times. The owner probably wanted to hoard these things for a chance of survival, but before they could get to use it, they have already fallen under the erupting tides of zombies.

The team members’ eyes were shining. They could not help walking quickly into the warehouse and rummaging through the inventory. Cries of surprise would ring out from time to time.

Yuan Zheng did not follow them in. His eyes fell on Su Shi who was still standing by the door.

The young man also happened to look at him. There was no expression on his delicate face, but his eyes faintly showed a slightly nervous expectation, as if he was waiting for his response.

The corners of his thin lips were slightly curved, and the golden sunset fell on his soft and slightly curled hair ends, making him seem pure and gentle.

There were not the slightest vestiges of darkness left at all.

“This is great. It’s a big help.”

Yuan Zheng chuckled lowly, and he couldn’t help the emotions surging up in his chest. He lightly gathered Su Shi into his arms and stroked a palm comfortingly across his thin back.

“It’s okay, you don’t need to give us everything. You have to keep a little more for yourself, and give yourself a way out…”

The body in his arms moved a bit, and the young man raised his head to look up at him. Those shining black eyes faintly expressed unease.

“Don’t be afraid, nothing will change, everything will be exactly the same as before.”

Meeting his gaze, Yuan Zheng’s tone was soft and gentle. He hugged the body in his arms tight, and patiently held his hand: “First, let’s see what we can use from inside the warehouse. We’re still a few days journey away from the Bloodthirsty Forest, we-”

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

His words halted abruptly and his eyes were filled with confusion and anxiety. He wanted to move, but his body has gone soft. He forced his eyes open with great difficulty, but the light of awareness in his eyes was dimming quickly.

“Sorry…”

Su Shi steadily supported the protagonist who he had caused to faint. On the way down, he placed the protagonist within the boundaries of the warehouse. With all the available supplies, it should not be a problem to live here for a few days.

The abnormal movements by the door attracted the team members’ attention. But when they looked over, they only had time to see their unconscious captain being pushed further into the warehouse.

Su Shi was still standing at the door. With his back to the setting sun, his expression was casted in shadows, and only his thin silhouette could be discernable. He silently took a step back.

Before the others could react, the heavy door of the warehouse abruptly closed on them.

Chapter 76 – Lunar New Year’s Eve (24.1)

Inside the Xue family mansion, Xue Rong, Xue Rong’s di son Xue Zhi Chao, Xue Gui, and Xue Song were gathered together.

The Xue family has been investigating the incident around Xue Zhi Qi’s death for a long time, but they still did not find any clues. Xue Gui was very not reconciled when he left the meeting. Xue Rong watched his younger brother Xue Gui’s departing back. In the blink of an eye, Xue Gui had seemed to age by several years. The loss of his heir was a really big blow to him.

Xue Rong sighed, “In the days to come, be sure to urge all the sons and nephews in the family to restrain themselves and not be ostentatious when they’re outside. I have a feeling that a storm is coming…”

“Father, are you saying…” Xue Zhi Chao also went silent.

“Zhi Chao, go and write a letter to His Royal Highness Prince Li. See if you can send two di grandsons to Li City…”

Prince Li’s territory was the Xue family’s last place of retreat.

Xue Rong knew that sooner or later the emperor was going to liquidate the Xue family. There was no emperor in existence that would tolerate the existence of a family that used to always go against him. Right now, the Xue family has lost most of its power and influence, the emperor’s power has been stabilized, and there was such an excellent heir apparent to the throne.

Deep in his heart, Xue Rong knew that there was no hope for Prince Li. Moreover, Prince Li was not a di son of the previous emperor. As long as Prince Li did not make any mistakes and just remained an idle prince, the emperor would not be able to eradicate them all…

“Understood. Father, I will go right now to write a letter to His Royal Highness Prince Li.”

In Prince Li’s mansion, Prince Li Xuan Yuan Zhao Hong was reading the letter sent from the capital on a fast horse. He looked over the letter that Xue Rong and them had sent. They were asking to send their di grandsons to Li City.

Xuan Yuan Zhao Hong sneered inside his heart, “This Xue Rong is becoming more and more timid…”

Xuan Yuan Zhao Hong continued to read the letter. His brows furrowed when he got to the news written in the letter. Word has it that the crown prince was favoring a ger xiaoshi, while the crown princess was sick in bed and could not receive any visitors. It seemed that things were a little strange in the capital… Thinking of the secret between him and Xue Cai Yu…

Xuan Yuan Zhao Hong had not contacted Xue Cai Yu for a long time. Recently, he was preparing to send some powdered drugs over, but the flowering season of the plant needed for that drug was very short. He had only just sent someone to go get the plant.

[T/N: Reminder, the powdered drug is the impotency medicine that Xue Cai Yu, the crown princess, was slipping to XYHC.]

Xuan Yuan Zhao Hong summoned his confidants and ordered them to go to the capital to make contact with the spies in the crown prince’s East Palace. He wanted to find out what happened to the crown princess. Was she really sick, or was she…

With the cause of Xue Zhi Qi’s death still unknown, the one in the most pain was his mother Zhao-shi.

The more she thought about it, the more unwilling she became. Thus, Zhao-shi summoned her trusted momo to discuss…

Zhang Ying Xiang received his father’s orders. At first, he was obedient and did not go outside, but after a long time he couldn’t stand the boredom anymore. Zhang Ying Xiang saw that the past few days were calm. The Xue family had interrogated him twice, but didn’t send any more people after that.

Zhang Ying Xiang slipped out of the house quietly and went to the restaurant to drink tea. A few days passed and nothing happened. Zhang Ying Xiang gradually became less and less vigilant, and continued to have fun with some friends*.

[*T/N: The specific term used for friends here defines them as scoundrels and rogue, a.k.a. the bad crowd.]

That night, when Zhang Ying Xiang came out of a brothel, someone threw a sack over his head and beat him up as soon as he turned a street corner…

Zhang Ying Xiang could only perceive the darkness in front of his eyes, and then were dense sticks beating him. He cried out in pain. In particular, he could feel a rain of blows centered on his legs. Ultimately, he could only curl up and roll on the ground in pain.

When Xue Gui found out, he was enraged. He ran to question Zhao-shi, “Did you do that to Zhang Ying Xiang? I already told you that Zhi Qi’s death had nothing to do with the Zhang family…”

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

“So what if it has nothing to do with them? We clearly told him to follow our Zhi Qi. But when our Zhi Qi died, he was perfectly fine. They should already consider themselves lucky that I didn’t make them pay for my son’s life with his life…” Zhao-shi was practically going crazy.

“You’re simply unreasonable. If you’re like this… What will Zhang Ji He think if he finds out…”

Xue Gui thought about how Zhang Ji He has been with him for more than twenty years and knew many of his secrets. Zhao-shi has gone crazy. The other shu sons of the Xue family were all mediocre at best. Good thing he fathered an illegitimate child outside some years ago. And now, that child has grown up to be pretty good…

[T/N: shu son – son of a concubine]

Zhang Ji He stayed alone in the study with a heavy expression on his face. He recalled the scene of his son lying in bed and unable to move. Zhang Ying Xiang’s hamstrings were all broken. Thinking of his son who might not be able to walk well in the future, hatred roared in Zhang Ji He’s heart. His thoughts were full of turmoil.

Chapter 15 – The Things I Want to Give to You

Rumor has it that after the imperial general Jun Rufei obtained a SSS-level mecha manufactured by Qingkong, he bluntly said that “it is easy to obtain the world, but it is hard to commission Qingkong.” It was the general’s greatest compliment to the mecha designer.

To think that Li Rong actually managed to contact Qingkong… and he was even going to give An Ji a customized mecha?

In an instant, the gaze with which An Yanming looked at Li Rong changed. He sighed, “Of course, of course, gifting a mecha is very good.”

As expected of a young man who has taken a fancy to his son. He was indeed reliable.

Xu Jing’an stretched out her hand to grab her husband and complained in a low voice, “What’s wrong with you?”

An Yanming frowned, “What are you doing?”

“What’s the point of gifting a mecha as an engagement present?” Xu Jing’an lowered her voice. She was very annoyed. “I’ve seen alpha and omega engagements gifting estate, jewelry, and even planets, but I’ve never seen someone giving an omega a mecha! It’s both expensive and useless. Moreover, you have to return a gift of the same price. Isn’t that such a big waste of money?”

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

An Yanming’s eyes widened: “How is that money wasted? That’s a mecha made by Qingkong!”

“Who cares if it’s Qingkong or Yukong*?” Xu Jing’an poked An Yanming’s chest with her gorgeous and exquisite manicure. Then she said word by word, “Mechas are useless. You have to know that an omega’s frail spiritual power cannot pilot a mecha.”

[*T/N: XJA is making a joke out of Qingkong’s name. Qingkong means “clear sky” and Yukong means “rainy sky.”]

An Yanming said righteously: “It looks good on display!”

Xu Jing’an replied, “Anyways, it’s you who wants to play with mechas. You don’t care if your son is doing well or not!”

An Yanming murmured softly, “What he’s gifting is a mecha by Qingkong. If someone gifted that to me, I would want to get marry…”

“What did you say?” Xu Jing’an glared.

“N- nothing!” An Yanming had strong survival instincts. “I said everything is up to you!”

Hmph, that’s right. Xu Jing’an thought.

Xu Jing’an put on a fervent smile again, and said to Li Rong, “Thank you for taking An Ji to get a customized mecha, but he is an omega, he really can’t operate such a high-end mecha. Why don’t you return it? Don’t waste money needlessly.”

And don’t make us waste money needlessly, she added in her head.

After all, a mecha could not compare to jewelry and precious stones. That kind of toy was extremely expensive. A mecha created by Qingkong was worth the value of several planets. Xu Jing’an didn’t dare to let An Ji accept this kind of hot potato, so she better find an excuse to refuse it.

“It’s fine even if he can’t use it.” Li Rong said lightly. “Just keep it as a toy.”

The smile on Xu Jing’an’s face froze.

An Ji was also surprised. He tugged on Li Rong’s sleeve and said in a low voice, “Wasn’t that just an excuse? Don’t just agree to gift a mecha. It’s not like we can get a Qingkong mecha out of thin air.”

“It’s not an excuse.” Li Rong looked down at him, his dark pupils filled with seriousness, “I’ve wanted to give you one for a long time now.”

It turned out to be the truth?!

An Ji raised his head with a blank expression on his face: “But why?”

Li Rong looked at him silently. His eyes were filled with dense emotions.

Even now Li Rong could still clearly remember the moment he learned of An Ji’s death. And in the long nights that followed, he woke up again and again from nightmares, dripping with cold sweat and regretting his mistakes.

He kept thinking that if only An Ji had a mecha at that time, if only An Ji had a means to protect himself, then he would not have been forced to explode his mental core during the operation and die in a foreign place.

After rebirth, the first thing that Li Rong had to do was to An Ji stronger.

The conventionally beautiful omega was a delicate thing. This was especially so in the Capital Star. The omegas here were educated to be elegant and quiet since they were young. Society arranged for them to learn the arts and etiquette, but refused to let them participate in fighting like alphas and betas.

Countless ignorant omegas were taught to be modest when they should be fighting, and were taught to restrain their anger when they should be angry. So they turned into exquisite dolls, wearing complicated garments, and waiting for their fate to be married.

Their life was not determined by themselves, but by the quality of character of their marriage partner.

If they married a virtuous partner then it was a life of happiness and bliss, but if they married a bad partner then it was a life of trials and hardships, drifting and hopeless. The most terrifying thing was that when misfortune struck, they did not have the slightest power to resist.

Perhaps there were a lot of people who liked the caged canary type of omega, but Li Rong was definitely not among them.

Compared with beautiful and harmless roses, he would rather his lover cultivate a solid wall of iron, so that he could stand up to others and stand shoulder to shoulder with him in the wind and rain.

Chapter 133.2 – Royal Banquet

“No one knows what will happen in the future.”

An Zi Ran only believed in human effort, with effort, one could achieve anything, whereas the future was a vague and illusory thing. No one knew whether or not mishaps would happen in the middle of a journey, thus distorting the predetermined trajectory.

Fu Yuan Fan just wanted to complain. He didn’t actually think he was going to die for certain. He’s actually someone who pursued timely enjoyments.

Not too long after, Fu Yuan Fan then left through the wangfu’s back door. He was afraid that someone would see him interacting with the people from the Fu wangfu, so when he came, he was also very furtive.

Support the translator. Read this on vmnovels (dot) com

Not long after he left, Ge Qian An and the others came over.

During his absence away from Jun Zi City, these were the people who helped him take care of the affairs in the capital. Second Uncle would occasionally help him take care of matters, but Second Uncle also had his own affairs to tend to.

Li Zhen, who managed the playing cards workshop, reported first.

After An Zi Ran left the capital, Li Zhen’s workshop launched several batches of playing cards. Each batch of playing cards sold out very quickly. After going up on the shelves, they would sell out within a few days. The sales results were even better than An Zi Ran had imagined.

The people in the capital were actually not as poor as he had thought. Many people still had a bit of money stored away. The playing cards were a bit expensive, but with a bit of forbearance, the money they spent could be saved up again. Even if the later market was a bit saturated [with playing cards], they still sold out very quickly.

However, playing cards were no longer a monopoly in the capital.

After they launched the third batch of playing cards, Bao Hao Gambling House also produced a batch of playing cards. The price of their cards was cheaper by ten yuan. The paper they used was the same: official card paper, but the appearance of the cards was not as exquisite as theirs. However, the masses were not very particular about how the cards looked, so it still attracted some customers.

Li Zhen remembered what An Zi Ran said before he left, and soon made adjustments. When the fourth batch of cards went on the market, they were twenty yuan cheaper than the previous batches.

He didn’t touch the profits, but rather decreased manufacturing costs.

An Zi Ran had anticipated this kind of situation, so he bought a certain paper workshop at a high price and expanded it a long time ago. Now this paper workshop specialized in the production of paper materials for the playing card workshop. The official card paper they used was no longer made from fine bamboo. Although there were differences in quality, there was no difference to the people as long as they could be used to play with.

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

Bao Hua Gambling House’s playing cards took a hit, and their momentum languished slightly. It was too late for them to make adjustments. The market in the capital was already saturated [with playing cards].

Right now, Li Zhen was thinking of promoting playing cards in towns near the capital. But because there were no gambling houses in other towns for promoting playing cards, the results will definitely be worse, so he thought of two ways to solve this problem.

One was to find someone to specifically teach the locals how to play cards.

The second was to open gambling houses in those places. This method would take time, but the intensity of publicity was better than the first method.

An Zi Ran pondered for a while before speaking, “Both methods are fine. My idea is to combine them. More than one method can be implemented at the same time. Only in this way can we occupy the market first. If we wait for a new gambling house to be built first, it will be too late by then.”

“But other places are not like Jun Zi City, where we have Tian Long Gambling House to advertise the playing cards. The people may not be willing to spend more than a hundred yuan to buy a set of playing cards that is of little use in their opinion.”

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

An Zi Ran knew what he was worried about, and said, “Don’t worry, there is more than one way of playing cards. In the future, I will continue to introduce various ways of playing with cards. It will also be good publicity for the newly opened gambling houses.”

Li Zhen immediately felt relieved when he heard this. After discussing about some more details with An Zi Ran, he got up and left.

Ge Qian An originally wanted to talk to An Zi Ran about the gambling house. After Bao Hua Gambling House launched card games at their casino too, it was inevitable that some gamblers would leave Tian Long Gambling House and go over there.

The amount of gamblers that they lost was not high. Tian Long Gambling House still held sway over the majority, but the card game was a little monotonous and it was not suitable for long-term development. The gamblers would only slowly share how to play the game with others.

But now that Ge Qian An knew that there were still various ways to play with cards, he could guess what the wangfei was planning.

Chapter 89 – Jealousy

Qiu Jin said: “You don’t hate me now, do you?”

Ji Qisheng’s chest didn’t feel as tight as before, but he was still stubborn: “Just average. You’re far from reaching my level.”

“Since you don’t agree, how about we have a match?”

Ji Qisheng thought for a moment, then raised his eyebrows and said, “Compete in singing?”

He wasn’t afraid of Qiu Jin or anything, but singing out in the countryside was just like singing folk songs. It was too out of style for him.

“How about picking corn? Whoever reaches the target [number] first is the better one.”

Ji Qisheng was dissatisfied: “What kind of competition is that? It’s too out of style.”

“Then what do you want to compete in?” Qiu Jin smiled, “Are we going to compete to see who eats more or who walks faster?”

He was clearly mocking Ji Qisheng’s childish behaviors from before. Ji Qisheng was done. He glared at Qiu Jin. “Fine, let’s compete. Do you think I’m afraid of you?!”

Support the translator. Read this on vmnovels (dot) com

The two arrived at the cornfield. Qiu Jin picked corn at his usual speed, but Ji Qisheng ran back and forth as if he had been injected with chicken blood and in a short while he swept through nearly half of the cornfield.

When Ji Qisheng looked at the four boxes filled with corn in front of him, he squinted his eyes proudly. Although he was exhausted and out of breath, his heart was filled with unprecedented satisfaction.

As for Qiu Jin… he was still trying to fill the second box!

When [the competition] was over, Ji Qisheng had filled six boxes by himself.

The director was also shocked when he came to count the results. In the end, he took out six hundred yuan as their living expenses for the week.

Qiu Jin handed the money to Ji Qisheng with a sincere expression: “Congratulations.”

Ji Qisheng: “?”

“You wiped out half of the country* by yourself.”

[*T/N: 半壁江山 – “half of the country” is a standard idiomatic saying in Chinese, and in this case Qiu Jin is obviously referring to the cornfield when he said “country”]

Ji Qisheng: “???”

What the f*ck? So this was the true purpose of Qiu Jin’s competition?!

Ji Qisheng felt deceived and said angrily: “You didn’t want to compete with me at all, you just wanted to make me pick corn for you?”

Qiu Jin replied, “That’s not true. I’m sincerely congratulating you.”

Ji Qisheng: “…”

F*ck. Rural roads are slippery. Human hearts are complicated.

All the participants in the TV program laughed. Ji Qisheng was about to puff up like an angry cat again, but when he saw his brother was smiling, he couldn’t help but restrain his temper. Forget it. Just think of it as making his big brother happy.

But he was secretly stifling his anger. After they finished all their work, Ji Qisheng drenched Qiu Jin from head to toe with the water pipe while he was washing his face.

“Ji Qisheng, what’s wrong with you?!”

Qiu Jin never thought that the youngster would do this. His whole shirt was soaking wet, and even his hair was dripping with water.

Ji Qisheng threw away the water pipe and said smugly, “For a nobleman to take revenge, ten years is not too long.”

[T/N: The closest English equivalent of what Ji Qisheng just said would be: “revenge is a dish best served cold.”]

“Oh, is that so?” Qiu Jin sneered, “There won’t be any dinner for you tonight.”

Ji Qisheng’s entire person went rigid. He hesitated for only two seconds, and immediately adapted to the situation with flexibility. He handed a dry towel over: “I’m sorry, I was wrong, wipe it, wipe it.”

Translations are by vmnovels [dot] com, if you’re reading this anywhere else, then it was stolen.

Qiu Jin squinted his eyes and looked the other party up and down. Only after a good long while did he withdrew his gaze and accepted the towel.

While Qiu Jin was wiping his head, Ji Qisheng stood beside him, guarding him like a big dog.

Qiu Jin said: “You have nothing else to do?”

“No,” Ji Qisheng shook his head, “and you smell so good! I don’t want to leave.”

Qiu Jin’s movements stopped for a moment.

Ji Qisheng was confused. “It’s unscientific. You are an alpha. So why are you more fragrant than an omega?”

Qiu Jin slowly put down the towel without turning his head: “I’m gonna go now.”

“Hey, I was joking!” Ji Qisheng caught up with Qiu Jin and put his arm around his shoulder. He asked tactlessly, “Why is there something flapping from your neck? Did you get sunburn? Aren’t you too delicate? I can help you [reluctantly] apply medicine.”

Qiu Jin’s footsteps quickened a bit, and his voice became cold: “No need.”

The gland patch had loosened up from his sweat, and he wiped at it with a towel, so it was not sticky anymore. So Qiu Jin just straight up tore it off.

Not too far away, Ji Shenxiao and Shan Wen were coming back with some fruit. Tan Yunting met up with them with a small bamboo basket in hand.

Shan Wen pointed forward and said, “Ji Qisheng was rejecting Qiu Jin so much yesterday, but today they’re already so close.”

Tan Yunting said: “Xiao Qiu* is such a good person, who wouldn’t like him?”

[*T/N: “Xiao Qiu” is a nickname for Qiu Jin. “Xiao” means “small or little,” and it’s a form of endearment. Qiu is the same as his surname.]

Ji Shenxiao followed Shan Wen’s line of sight. He saw two tall, young men standing under the eaves. Qiu Jin’s clothes were all wet. Ji Qisheng’s hands were around his shoulders. Ji Shenxiao didn’t know what they were talking about, but Ji Qisheng bent his head and sniffed the back of Qiu Jin’s neck.

Qiu Jin pushed him away, but it was evidently a playful action and not actual rejection.

What an eyesore.

The scorching sun was in the sky, but Ji Shenxiao’s face was becoming colder and colder.

Translations by Vanilla Muse.

Ji Shenxiao didn’t realize he had broken the peach in his hand until he heard a “puchi” sound and liquid soaked through his fingers.

When they entered the villa, everyone noticed that Ji Shenxiao’s facial expression wasn’t good.

Qiu Jin asked casually, “Who offended you? Why are you so angry?”

Ji Qisheng also asked, “Brother, are you all right?”

“It’s nothing,” Ji Shenxiao said lightly. “Ji Qisheng, you should go back tomorrow.”
